The Benefits of Sober Living Residences

Sober living homes, also known as residential drug rehab centers and sober living neighborhoods, are residential facilities that offer structured, safe living conditions and adequate support for those leaving drug rehab programs. SLHs are usually intended for individuals who have at least six months of full-time drug treatment and who need specialized, intensive support after leaving the facility. They can be short-term or long-term care facilities. Short-term care settings offer more security, while long-term care settings offer a more therapeutic and restorative environment.

There are several types of residential Sober Living Homes including: halfway houses, RCFE's ( Rehabilitation Centers for Drug and Alcohol Education), and RAA (Red Ribbon Aide Houses). In most cases, a person entering one of these halfway houses will be undergoing an intense drug and alcohol treatment program. In some cases a person will enter into a RAA halfway house on their own. In either case, SLH homes offer wraparound care from the time a person gets to the center until they are either discharged or enter back into the community, depending on their needs and circumstances. The majority of people who complete a drug and alcohol treatment program in a SLH are successfully returning to society. Check out also on how to find a sober living!

While there are many benefits of entering into a recovery home, there are drawbacks as well. One such drawback is loneliness; for many people, being sober is the first step in opening up and connecting with others. In addition, once someone has entered into a sober living setting, their social network is generally gone. For those who do not know how to interact with others, the isolation can lead to feelings of hopelessness, depression, and even self-pity.

Some benefits include daily contact with staff and fellow residents, the opportunity to socialize with non-residents and guests, opportunities to volunteer for important projects, and moderate activities such as concerts and movies. A benefit of so called "sober living residences" is that there are usually structured therapies and activities. These activities may include art therapy, massage therapy, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, nutritional counseling, group discussions, and family programs. Many times, a resident will attend college classes on a part-time basis while attending the facility.

Another benefit of residential alcohol use rehab centers and sober living residences is the ability to stay at home. For many individuals, the temptation to go out and use is too much to handle. With the help of staff and other residents, these individuals are able to stay in their own home, eliminating the need to drink alcohol.

When an individual begins recovery from alcohol abuse, it is extremely beneficial to enter into one of the programs offering so-called "sober" living residences. These programs provide the individual with a safe, secure environment that minimizes the chance of relapse. The goal of treatment programs in many of these establishments is to get the individual back into society as if they were new, without having to experience the emotional and physical changes associated with alcohol abuse and addiction. Treatment programs offering "sober" living residence programs provide an environment that allows addicts and alcohol abusers to make positive changes in their lives and their lifestyles.
