The Goals of a Sober Living Program

Sober living homes, also known as residential drug rehabs and sober living homes, are residential facilities that offer structured, secure living conditions for those leaving drug rehab programs. SLHs are temporary, medically-supervised residences designed to help recover addicts from their addictions. Usually housed in group homes or apartments, people coming out of drug rehab programs go through a process of detox and aftercare in an SLH. People in an SLH have gone though an extensive screening process to determine if they are ready for a return to an active lifestyle and if so, what they can expect while in the home.

For people entering into a long term or residential treatment program, being in an independent living program gives them the ability to function on their own without constantly supervision. Many people who enter rehab are unable to return to work until they complete their mandated release requirements, which typically take six to twelve months. For this reason, there are few opportunities for full or part-time employment in the immediate aftermath of a treatment program.

In an independent living environment, aftercare is very limited, which also requires increased accountability. The first level of accountability in a sober living setting is having a scheduled time out each day. At this time, the resident is evaluated to see if she needs any additional assistance to deal with stress, anxiety or other factors that make her feel overwhelmed and vulnerable. If she does need help, staff are required to provide it.

The second level of accountability in a California sober living setting is having assigned support groups. These support groups consist of individuals who have been through the same situation as the resident. They assist with providing information and discussing methods of dealing with post-rehab stress. SLH programs may require these support groups, because it is not feasible to have one-on-one counseling on a monthly basis. Therefore, the resident is forced to turn to outside sources for advice and counseling.

In order to keep residents in recovery, there needs to be an emphasis on ongoing support groups. This is a significant part of the Level One goal of sobriety, as it builds up the individual's ability to stay clean and sober. After all, who would want to leave such a wonderful opportunity? The third goal of a SLH program is to ensure that a resident is able to participate in various activities that are designed to promote mental health, physical health and social skills development. Therefore, the level of support groups required for full recovery is important.

Aftercare is an important part of the success of a so-called sober living program. However, it is not possible to keep people in recovery by themselves. Rather, there must be some form of intervention, whether it be therapy sessions, support groups or medication to maintain a sense of wellness after a period of inpatient care. This can ensure that the recovery process runs smoothly and that the environment is conducive to full sobriety. Find a sober living!
